The deaf actress, who featured in the Godzilla vs Kong film series, was involved in a fatal single vehicle accident on Tuesday 21 July and tragically passed away while on the way to the hospital. 

Her father Joshua Hottle, shared the news to TMZ and in a 23-minute emotional Facebook livestream where he confirmed in ASL (American Sign Language) that she had died at the age of 18. Police caught on bodycam footage "I am taking a flight that I never would like to take," he said as he prepared to fly from Texas to Maryland to claim his daughter's body. 

Now, audio obtained by Page Six has revealed a heartbreaking detail about the crash and the immediate aftermath, as first responders desperately searched for someone proficient in sign language as they attempted to communicate with Hottle. Kaylee was the only person who died in the crash (Bobby Bank/Getty Images) In the audio, officials can be heard saying: "If anybody has access to the interpreter app on the phones, can you please start this way? Because we need a sign language interpreter." The Frederick County Sheriff, Fire and EMS dispatch audio also revealed that Hottle was 'unconscious' when she was first discovered as the responders worked to assess everyone involved in the crash. 

However, while Hottle's injuries would prove to be fatal, the 19-year-old driver was transported to hospital with injuries which were said to be non life-threatening, while another passenger declined treatment at the scene. 

Police said the vehicle 'traveled off the right side of the two-lane roadway and struck a culvert', adding 'excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor'. First responders in the audio noted the 'heavy front-end damage' and suggested that the car had travelled roughly 10 feet off the roadway and into a culvert. 

The police statement added: "Hottle was transported from the scene to an area trauma center, where she was later pronounced deceased. 

"The crash remains under investigation by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information related to this investigation is asked to contact Dfc. Rose at 301-600-1046." The audio also reveals that another individual, who is presumed to be the driver, had asked to be seen by medics after complaining of 'rib pain'.

She had made her acting debut in the Godzilla vs. Kong 2021 release, starring alongside Millie Bobby Brown and Alexander Skarsgård, who learned sign language so that he could properly communicate with her. 

The actress then reprised her role in the 2024 sequel, while also playing a part in the 2021 Magnum P.I reboot. 

Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, where she attended, said in a tribute on social media: “It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that one of our TSD seniors, Kaylee Hottle, tragically passed away yesterday in a car accident in Frederick, Maryland. 

“Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Canadian hit-maker was welcomed onto the pitch just moments ago by Ted Lasso actor Jason Sudeikis, after which he lifted up his guitar and performed a fully acoustic version of his mellow hit, 'Everything Hallelujah'. 

His set has long been expected to generate significant attention, marking one of his highest-profile performances in recent years and fuelling the internet's long-running ‘Bieber Cup’ jokes, with fans teasing that the tournament has become an unofficial Justin Bieber concert after his surprise performances and public appearances, including at Coachella - later dubbed 'Bieberchella' by social media earlier this summer - sparked renewed excitement over the singer's return to the spotlight.

The final is taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, known during the tournament as the New York New Jersey Stadium. 

Over 82,500 fans are packed into the venue, which has hosted seven World Cup matches this year. Pre-match entertainment and the trophy presentation complete the day’s schedule.​ The half-time show is the first of its kind, with curated performances by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in partnership with Global Citizen. 

Also included in the line-up were Madonna, Shakira, and BTS as co-headliners, alongside Burna Boy, conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the PS22 Chorus, Coldplay, and appearances from characters including Sesame Street and The Muppets.

Already, we saw Jennifer Hudson perform 'The Star Spangled Banner', despite the US having been booted out of the competition several weeks ago. 

Spain secured themselves a spot in the final after defeating France 2-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday (14 Jul), having also overcome Belgium, Portugal and Austria in the knockout rounds. Argentina reached the final by beating England 2-1 in a heartbreaking defeat for the Three Lions, following victories over Switzerland, Egypt and Cape Verde. In the days leading up to the final, there was widespread speculation about whether US President Donald Trump would attend, with his presence prompting heightened security measures around the stadium before it was confirmed he would attend. 

Ticket prices have also been a major talking point throughout the tournament. FIFA faced criticism over its use of dynamic pricing, with standard tickets for the final reaching thousands of dollars and some resale listings climbing significantly higher, prompting complaints from supporters and politicians alike over affordability. 

Meanwhile, fans travelling to the stadium have reported lengthy queues amid enhanced security and ticket scanning issues ahead of kick-off. Once the match concludes, attention will turn to the medal ceremony, the presentation of the FIFA World Cup Trophy and the closing ceremony, officially bringing the 2026 tournament to an end.

Spain claimed victory in the World Cup, beating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in a tense finale to what has been an exciting and at times controversial tournament. 

As the Spanish team lifted the trophy and celebrated, US president Donald Trump stood next to them on the podium along with Infantino. 

Trump was one of the few people who was permitted to handle the World Cup trophy, presenting it to Spanish captain Rodrigo Cascante, or Rodri, before the team celebrated their victory. 

But all the while Trump could be seen hovering at the side of the stage in a repeat of the move he pulled at the FIFA Club World Cup last year. Body language expert Mark Bowden told via casino.ca why Trump was eager to remain onstage during the celebrations, even as he claimed Infantino was trying to direct him away.

"However, Trump lingers on the edge of the group just as the final glitter cannons go off for the celebration still shot that will be shown across the world. 

"By doing so, Trump manages to get a chance to remain in the final, iconic photograph." 

"More Team FIFA than Team Trump" 

Bowden also claimed the winning team appeared to be happier to interact with Infantino than they were with Trump. 

"Throughout the line, players from both sides, including the victorious Spaniards, clearly preferred to spend more time with the FIFA President with whom they were much more jovial and physically comfortable and celebratory than with President Trump," he told. 

"It is clear who is most valuable in that lineup to them, they were clearly more 'Team FIFA' than 'Team Trump'!" Bowden also noticed one thing about Trump's body language and interactions which appeared to be different to how he often interacts with others. 

"Again and of note, Trump makes no attempt to pull any of these players off balance, completely breaking from his purposeful, signature handshake routine," he said. Crucially, Bowden noted that the players themselves appeared to be less than thrilled at the prospect of interacting with Trump. 

"None of the players spend a second longer than necessary with Trump, except for Spain's captain, Rodrigo (number 16)," said Bowden. "Trump gives him a double shoulder hold, doing his best to assert some kind of connection and mutual dominance with the chief player of the winning side." 

Trump presented the trophy to Rodri, with Bowden analyzed the body language in this climactic moment in the World Cup. 

"Finally, the World Cup trophy is presented," he said. "The FIFA President and Trump present it equally together, with both men placing both hands on the trophy at the exact same time and carrying it together, a clear demand from FIFA that the status be shared."

It’s set to run from June 8 2030 to July 21 2030, making it the longest World Cup in history at 44 days. 

FIFA also announced that three separate matches will take place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, as a tribute to the first-ever World Cup back in 1930. All six host nations will automatically qualify, which means we'll definitely be seeing Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay in at least the group stages. 

In Spain, matches will take place in Barcelona, Bilbao, Las Palmas, Madrid, San Sebastian, Seville, Valencia, Vigo and Zaragoza. In Portugal, stadiums in Lisbon and Porto have been earmarked, while the games in Morocco will be played in Agadir, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakesh, Rabat and Tangier. 

Plus the three special opening centenary games will be played at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, Argentina; the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay; and the Estadio Osvaldo Dominguez Dibb in Asuncion, Paraguay.

The US president also greeted Lionel Messi and the rest of the Argentina team, as he placed the second place medals around their neck, alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. 

After the dramatic end to the game and post-match chaos, Trump walked onto the New York/New Jersey Stadium pitch, as he prepared for his big moment.

Although we know Trump isn't one for a filter, it looked like he was on his best behavior last night, repeating one phrase to the players, a lip reader reveals. However, Argentine centre-back Cristian Romero appeared to snub the president's handshake during the presentation, seemingly walking straight past him after he received his medal from Infantino. 

Despite delivering a short message and not taking up too much of the players' time when placing the medals around the neck, Trump seemingly decided it was his time to shine when it was trophy time. The POTUS, who walked out onto the pitch with a number of boos, was seen holding the trophy with the FIFA president, as they presented it to Spain. 

However, instead of letting the Spanish team have their moment with the trophy, which they won for the second time in the team's history, it seems Trump couldn't help but remain the center of attention. However, after being ushered away by Infantino, Trump finally let the winners enjoy their moment. The massive multi-million-dollar electronic wire transfer marks the definitive end of a bitter, years-long legal battle following a 2023 civil trial. 

A unanimous nine-person Manhattan jury had found Trump liable for sexually abusing the former advice columnist in a luxury department store dressing room in the 1990s, as well as subsequently defaming her when she publicly came forward.

"The Eagle Has Landed," Carroll wrote, before thanking more than a dozen current and former members of her high-powered legal team who helped carry the case across the finish line. 

However, it was her parting shot directed at Trump's own fiery powerhouse attorney that completely captured the internet's attention. Taking an incredibly public, sarcastic swipe at the defense team's failed efforts to block the money, Carroll added: "And... a special, special thanks to Alina Habba Esq.! I could not have done it without you." 

The savage trolling instantly went viral across social media with users flooded the timeline to react to the dramatic conclusion of the escrow battle. Carroll's lead attorney, Roberta Kaplan, also released a victorious statement to Axios on Tuesday, July 14, confirming the transfer, stating: “Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll," 

”Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict."

With a separate, staggering $83 million defamation judgment against Trump still working its way through the appeals process, the internet is bracing itself for the next chapter of this explosive legal saga.

Capitol riot and 2020 election 

A federal criminal case was held against Trump regarding his alleged participation in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 US presidential election, which saw Joe Biden be elected as president. The case also looked into his involvement in the January 6 Capitol attack, which saw a mob of thousands of his supporters break into the Capitol buidling. 

After Trump pleaded not guilty to attempting to overturn the results of the election through a plot in which pro-Trump slates of fake electors would be created, a judge dismissed the charges in 2024. 

New York hush money 

Shortly before the 2016 presidential election that Trump won, adult film actress Stormy Daniel claimed he paid her $130,000 to keep quiet about her claim that she had sex with him - something he denied.

Following a trial and jurors deliberating for two days, Trump was found guilty of all 34 counts of fraud under campaign finance laws, making him the first US president to become a convicted felon.

Men who are invited to the Royal Box must adhere to very strict rules as a smart jacket, tie and shoes are required. 

“Lewis arrived and it hadn’t been communicated to him by his assistants that it was a jacket and tie,” said former chief executive of the All England Club Richard Lewis in a statement for Sky Sports News.

“It was all very harmonious and we’ve made it clear to Lewis already that he’d be more than welcome to come back to the Royal Box in the future – and I’m sure he will.” The rules are so strict that even individuals with direct ties to the Royal Family, like Pippa Middleton, are not granted exceptions. This is a huge no-no in the eyes of Wimbledon, as there is a strict policy which forbids unpunctual guests from sitting in the seats if they arrive late. And just in case you’re wondering, the ‘protocol’ for female guests also calls for ‘smart’ clothing, such as an ‘afternoon dress or elegant trouser suit.’ 

Plus, hats are banned, as the website states: "Ladies are asked not to wear hats, as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them."

It seems the 41-year-old is currently single, and he has virtually never discussed his marriage to Kim since their split and the final divorce hearing in 2013.

Needoh Cubes, which are manufactured by toy company Schylling, are sensory toys that are 'designed to be as satisfying as they are fun', with a range spanning 50 different designs, including Cool Cats Needoh, Needoh Gummy Bear, and the Needoh Nice Cube. 

 

The toys have hit the viral market in both the US and abroad. The company didn't confirm to ABC News exact sales figures, but said the toys had brought in 'double-digit growth year over year'.

Psychopath recalls how he was officially diagnosed However, a viral social media challenge involving the toys has resulted in some children being hospitalised for severe burns across the US, with the Nassau County Fire Commission and Fire Marshal's Office in New York putting out a notice regarding this 'extremely dangerous' trend, which they claimed could 'lead to severe injury or death'. The Needoh Toys were released in 2017 and have grown in popularity (Schylling) According to various reports, the challenge involves briefly placing the toy in the microwave to make it more moldable, despite its label explicitly warning against heating, freezing, or microwaving it. 

This has resulted in serious injuries, as parents have shared photos of the second- or third-degree burns their children have received after doing so. 

"The right side of his face was melting off" 

According to ABC 7, nine-year-old Caleb Chabolla in Chicago was left with second-degree burns when a Needoh Nice Cube exploded across his face, as his mother Whitney Grub said: "The right side of his face was kind of melting off, basically. 

"He was crying and just yelling, 'It burns, it burns.'" Meanwhile, in their Facebook post, the Nassau County Fire Commission and Fire Marshal's Office said that 'several children around the world have suffered third-degree burns to the face', including a child in Nassau County who'd suffered 'second-and-third-degree burns'. 

"Toys are intended to be played with, as described on the label. Misusing a product by heating in a microwave, oven, or stovetop is dangerous," they continued. Caleb Chabolla, 9, was left with second-degree burns when one toy exploded in his face (CBS Chicago) "Parents, guardians, and other caretakers are urged to monitor any activities of children when they are in the kitchen. Accidents can happen to an adult in the kitchen, even if they take precautions, so for a child who doesn't know any better, the risk is even greater." 

"Significant tissue damage" 

The fire marshals aren't the only ones warning against this trend, as Dr Alicia Webb, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Children’s of Alabama, told The New York Post that parents should stay vigilant about the 'serious risk' these trends can pose to children. 

"Parents need to be aware of this trend and all dangerous social media challenges because they can pose a serious risk to children, and the children participating are not yet mature enough to recognize the danger for themselves," she said. 

She added that the hot toys can 'easily explode, causing burns to the face, eyes, mouth, body, and can even cause internal damage if the hot substance is swallowed'.

Caleb was left with some serious burns (CBS Chicago) Meanwhile, Dr Michael Cooper, a director of service for the burn unit at Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital, said that children's skin is especially delicate and 'even a brief contact with a hot substance can cause significant tissue damage'. 

Webb also reiterated the long-lasting health complications that a child could experience from a severe burn, including scarring or, in some cases, permanent disfigurement, which may require treatments such as skin grafts and specialised burn care. 

At the same time, Cooper further noted that burn injuries could result in 'long-term psychological and cosmetic effects that may last well beyond the initial recovery period'. 

In a statement to Tyla, a Schylling representative said that 'ensuring the safety of our consumers is fundamental for Schylling', adding: "We are disappointed to see there has been a trend on social media demonstrating misuse of our NeeDoh products. Misusing a NeeDoh product by microwaving, heating, or freezing is dangerous and could cause injury to the consumer." 

They continued to say that they had partnered with social media companies to 'remove influential content containing NeeDoh product misuse', as well as including 'a safety warning on NeeDoh packaging and our all e-commerce listings to help combat product misuse'. 

Shirilla, 21 is currently serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life in the Ohio Reformatory for Women, after she was found guilty of intentionally crashing a car into a building, which killed her boyfriend Dominic Russo, and friend, Davion Flanagan in 2022. 

The case has come to the spotlight once again, following Netflix's release of the documentary, The Crash. 

Parents warned over putting images of their children online On June 23, 2026, the Ohio Supreme Court declined to review Shirilla’s appeal case, as her lawyers missed the deadline for a post-conviction review by one day, due to the fact that 2024 was a leap year. 

This news was posted on her Instagram page, along with the selfie in question. The bio of the page states it's 'Run by Mackenzie’s Support Team'. Mackenzie's boyfriend Dom died in the crash (Netflix) However, many were questioning how she had sent over the snap. Russo's sister, Christine told TMZ it was 'heartbreaking' to see Shirilla's social media presence, while she and her family grieve the loss of her brother. 

She then went on to question whether 'whether rules regarding electronic devices had been violated', in the prison, asking people to reach out for them. Now, the chief spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction has spoken out. 

As per TMZ, JoEllen Smith, says the felon sent photos of herself through the prison's tablet called ViaPeth. This is apparently for the inmates to 'stay connected to loved ones'. 

It was then revealed by the Chief Inspector that the matter was reviewed, however, they came to the conclusion that the picture was not posted online by Shirilla as they 'do not have access to social media platforms on the ViaPath tablets,' the outlet reports. Shirilla will not be disciplined by the prison (Instagram/@mackenzieshirilla) She later added that it was acceptable for the inmates to 'send photos to family members using the tablet in compliance with the prison's rules and regulations'. The post before that was posted to the page seven weeks ago, in which Shirilla looked like she was wearing the same outfit. 

In the caption, a message was written 'from Mackenzie' claiming she 'was not perfect' and 'always loved Dom and would never do anything to hurt him'. All three of Shirilla's attempts to appeal her murder case have been denied by the Supreme Court. 

She will not be eligible for parole until September 2037.

July 31 2022 

Shirilla is driving Russo, 20, and their friend Davion Flanagan, 19, from Russo’s home to a friend’s house. At around 5.30am, she crashes the car into a Plidco Building in Strongsville, Ohio, travelling at 100mph without braking. Police arrive on the scene 45 minutes later. Russo and Flanagan are pronounced dead and Shirilla is transported to MetroHealth Medical Center. 

August 2022 

200 people attend a vigil for Russo and Flanagan. Shirilla remains in critical condition. When a detective visits her in hospital, she is said to be speaking a ‘unique language’ similar to pig Latin. 

 

October 2022 

Shirilla attends a Halloween party wearing fancy dress which resembles a corpse, which Davion’s father considers in very poor taste. He says in Netflix’s The Crash: “Dressing up as corpses three months after she killed two people, it just sickened us to the very core.” 

November 4 2022 

Shirilla is arrested and faces 18 charges, including two counts of aggravated murder. She also faces charges for allegedly breaking into the Columbia Church of God in Columbia Station days before the crash, along with drug trafficking and possession charges. 

August 7 2023 

Shirilla’s trial begins. Her defence team argue she may have passed out at the time of the crash due to postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), but no medical records or expert testimony confirms the diagnosis. 

August 14 2023 

Shirilla is found guilty on all counts. Judge Nancy Margaret Russo calls her ‘hell on wheels’, and the court concludes she intetionally crashed the car in a premeditated act. 

August 23 2023 

Shirilla is sentenced to two concurrent 15 years to life sentences. Her legal team later lose an appeal and relief petition. She remains incarcerated in Ohio Refamatory for Women. 

May 22 2025 

Mackenzie’s parents insist that she’s innocent. Her father Steve tells WKYC: “Show me one piece of evidence - one - that says she did this on purpose. Show it to me, then she's right where she belongs and she's guilty of it. But there isn't any.” Her mother Natalie claims there are texts in which Shirilla says Russo was ‘trying to end her life’. 

May 15 2026 

Netflix’s The Crash premieres. In it, Shirilla insists she is ‘not a murderer’ and has no memory of the crash, continuing to blame POTS. 

May 18 2026 

Steve Shirilla is placed on administrative leave from his job as an art and digital media teacher at Mary Queen of Peace School in Cleveland following allegations he had ‘demonstrated poor judgement’. Viewers of Netflix’s documentary objected to his attitude towards Shirilla’s marijuana use and his dismissal of claims she told a classmate to end their life. 

June 23 2026 

The Ohio Supreme Court declines to review Shirilla’s appeal case. Her lawyers missed the deadline for a post-conviction review by one day because 2024 was a leap year, and the court upheld an earlier decision that Shirilla’s conviction therefore could not be challenged. 

September 2037 

This is when Shirilla will be eligible for parole. 

McGregor retired just one minute and nine seconds into his comeback, storming out the ring whilst Holloway was declared the winner and refusing to do an interview with Joe Rogan. 

McGregor returned to the Octagon for the first time since his horror leg break against Dustin Poirier, fighting in a rematch against Holloway two weight classes up and 13 years on from their first bout at featherweight. 

MobLand season two teaser trailer The Irishman came out with a jumping kick in the opening moments, clearly landing awkwardly and hitting the deck. He soon after tried the same kick, again landing awkwardly as his knee gave out, and referee Mike Beltran was forced to waive off the contest. McGregor's return to the octagon didn't go to plan (TNT) McGregor has faced legal troubles amid his battle to return to the ring, having being found liable in a civil rape case in November 2024. 

Nikita Hand accused McGregor of raping her in a Dublin hotel in 2018. In Ireland, unlike the UK, complainants are not automatically granted anonymity in civil rape cases. 

A court heard she was badly bruised and a doctor had to remove a tampon she had been wearing using forceps. The trial led to widespread criticism of McGregor's return to MMA, particularly a recent interview on Jimmy Fallon’s show. McGregor has denied any wrongdoing.  McGregor’s return to fighting did not go to plan however, with Holloway reclaiming his loss against McGregor in 2013, and he will be unable to fight in the near future again. 

Why has Conor McGregor been suspended from MMA? 

Combat sports like MMA and boxing can take a big toll on an athlete's body, which is unsurprising given that you are effectively beating each other up. This results in bad injuries, including broken ribs and jaws, eye injuries, and of course trauma to the head. 

McGregor's knee blowing out of course comes as a massive shock, and may see him face another extended spell on the sidelines, but even if he changed his mind and wanted to fight tomorrow he wouldn't be able to.

Let's put it this way - you wouldn't go back to work with three broken ribs, so sporting bodies will bar athletes from competing for a mandatory rest period. 

It's unclear if McGregor would actually want to fight again anytime soon, taking long breaks after each of his last few fights. 

How long does the suspension last? 

How long someone is suspended for depends on several factors, including the assessment of a ringside physician who will determine whether someone needs a rest period. While some suspensions are just for a set period of time, for example one week, others require an athlete to meet certain conditions before being cleared to compete again to demonstrate that they are fit enough. Conor McGregor will be on the sidelines for an extended period (TNT) This varies by the local athletic commission the fight is taking place in, with Khamzat Chimaev making headlines in 2020 by fighting twice in 10 days in Abu Dhabi, the record for the modern era. The NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission) demand a minimum of one week, and can raise it to 180 days in some cases depending on the physical condition of an athlete after a match. 

However, they will be allowed to spar with contact during training. A TKO (Technical Knockout) ranges between 45 to 60 days, while severe damage requires an 180-day ban. The second higher level is a 'no contact' or 'no sparring' suspension, where someone's injuries are deemed to be serious enough that they require a period of no contact sport at all to allow their body to recover. 

These might be paired with a clearance requirement, such as being signed off by a doctor, getting certain medical scans, or even being signed off by a specialist. Another example of such suspensions was in the fight between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua, which took place last December. 

This saw Joshua breaking Paul's jaw during the bout, claiming victory. Under boxing regulations, the fighters were required to have three days' rest per round, and if someone has a technical knockout then they are suspended for 30 days to allow them to recover, while a full knockout is at least 60 days.

The American singer and actress, 56, and her younger sibling, 55, looked glamorous on the front row at the Celia Kritharioti haute couture fall and winter 2026/2027 show on Thursday (9 July). 

The celebrity sisters went for the same vibe as they donned angelic sequinned dresses, with J-Lo adding a white fur coat over the top. Others gushed: “Lynda is gorgeous” and “They’re both bombshells.” Lynda is one of Jennifer’s two siblings, as they also have a third older sister called Leslie Lopez, who is 58. In a 2015 interview with Arianna Huffington, the ‘On The Floor’ singer revealed: “When I moved out to LA, one of the things I missed most was my friendship with my sisters, especially Lynda.” 

Jennifer said Lynda was ‘somebody I could lean on,’ as she spoke of how she always felt like she had someone there to take care of her. In 2021, J-Lo posted a heartfelt birthday tribute to her sis, declaring that she’s her ‘ride or die’ and ‘original bestie’. 

She wrote on Instagram at the time: “My baby sister…I love you…you are and have always been my original bestie…my partner in crime, my ride or die.

After the news of 16 children living in horrifically inhumane conditions came out of Ohio last week, the firefighter who found them has spoken out on what shocked him the most. 

Emergency services were left in disbelief after discovering the children living in a tiny 12 feet by 12 feet room, covered in human faeces, where they have seemingly spent much of the past four years.

Some of the children were unable to talk and they were quickly transported to hospital, while the children's parents and two grandparents, Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders and Elizabeth Siders have also since been charged with felony child endangerment. 

Although officials had alluded to the awful conditions inside the house, with Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson suggesting they 'looked like almost feral animals', a firefighter on the scene has now explained more about what they found. Emergency services were shocked when they arrived at the scene (WSYX ABC 6/YouTube) Describing the home to Criminally Obsessed, Captain Jeremiah Griffith said: “You can see the cockroaches and stuff like that, bugs in general. Bugs get on the children and scratch and bite, so their condition wasn’t the greatest. As far as the smell, it’s just a certain type of smell. It’s not very pleasant. 

“Typically, I wear a mask if I endure those kind of conditions to kind of helps cover that up because it’s awful. It sticks with you. It sticks on your clothes and you can smell it for hours afterwards until you can go and change. Our livestock around here live in better conditions.”

Gary Siders Jr. and and Elizabeth Siders (Southeast Ohio Jail) Griffith was one of the first five people at the scene and he took it upon himself to quickly take the children to hospital, since they 'were clearly not in the greatest shape'. 

However, the most 'haunting' memory for the Hamden Fire Department captain wasn't there physical condition, but simply how quiet they were as he rushed them to get medical care. 

He added: “It was just quiet. That’s what it was. Blank expressions. Of course they were scared. They’ve never endured anything like that before. Authorities said the house 'didn’t even look like anyone was living in it' (WSYX ABC 6/YouTube) The kids ranged between 18 months and 18 years (WSYX ABC 6/YouTube) “They didn’t know where they were going. They didn’t speak to me. I tried to have limited contact unless I was asked to help with the children.” 

Officials also suggested that this is 'the type of thing that we're not used to seeing here in America' but there have been tragically similar cases in recent years, with children kept in a 'house of horrors'.

Griffith concluded: “This one just caught us by surprise really, because we didn’t really expect [it]. This house didn’t even look like anyone was living in it. All four of the charged guardians have entered not guilty pleas, while the grandfather was also released and rushed to hospital himself following a 'medical emergency'.

The superintendent of the Gallia County Local Schools in southeast Ohio told WSAZ3 there are records from this year showing Gary Jr. and Elizabeth were parents with a local school at the time. 

10 November 2022 

Elizabeth Siders prematurely delivers conjoined twins, who die an hour after they are born. Named Faith Lee and Bailey Lee Siders, they were joined at the chest, face-to-face, according to birth certificates obtained by WCMH. 

2022 Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said the Siders family moved to Vinton County, again in southeast Ohio, around this time. 

23 and 27 May 2026 

A criminal complaint against Gary Siders Jr accused him of ‘recklessly exposing his private parts’ on two occasions on these dates. 

30 June 2026 An arrest warrant is issued for Gary Siders Jr related to four alleged counts of public indecency. Police attend the Siders’ home in relation to this investigation and find 16 children living in what police describe as deplorable conditions. 

Authorities claim the children were confined to a 12-foot by 12-foot space for four years. Gary Siders Sr, 73, Christina Siders, 67, Gary Siders Jr, 36, and Elizabeth Siders, 33, are arrested and charged with 16 counts of endangering children, second degree felonies. All have since entered not guilty please. 

3 July 2026 

In an interview with WSYX ABC 6, Elizabeth Siders’ lawyer Thomas Stolly said on meeting his client for the first time: “I met a woman who was timid and who was exhausted. It looked like she had been crying quite a bit. She looked distraught.” 

When asked if Elizabeth is also a victim in the case, he says: “I don’t think she would classify herself as a victim.” He says the initial coverage of conditions at the Siders’ home is ‘not the whole story’. 

7 July 2026 

All four of the defendants waive their right to a preliminary hearing, meaning the case will now go before a grand jury. They will decide whether to indict the four accused family members. 

On the same day, Gary Sr.’s legal team ask for his $300,000 bail to be waived. They argue it is excessive, saying the 73-year-old has ‘significant health issues’ and ‘very limited mobility’, and doesn’t have the capacity to post any bail money. 

His lawyer, Dorian Keith Baum, says Gary Sr. ‘has denied any and all allegations against him’ and has ‘a vested interest… to clear his name’. Baum also says he has concerns about Gary Sr’s competency to stand trial. That day, Gary Sr. is transported to OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital in Athens. If released from hospital, he will be required to wear a GPS monitor. His bond is changed to a recognizance bond, which means he doesn’t have to pay the money upfront.
